Hello and welcome to the Real New Fall Film website. Filming is now underway for a new film about The Fall.

Since the untimely passing of Mark E Smith in 2018, a small industry has sprung up around The Fall – the group he fronted for 42 years. Ex-members have contributed to the growing number of books about The Fall. Albums are re-released with discs-ful of extras and lovingly written liner notes. There are numerous podcasts, including the fortnightly Oh! Brother podcast, hosted by Fall alumni and brothers, Paul and Steve Hanley. Ex-members continued the musical trajectory in groups such as HOUSE Of ALL, Imperial Wax and Brix & the Extricated and The Fall endure as an influence, both in music and attitude, for dozens of bands, including Parquet Courts, Working Men’s Club and Fat White Family. There have been symposiums and festivals celebrating all things Fall.

I want to tell the full story of The Fall and the legacy they have left behind. It’s a story of resilience, dedication and the refusal to compromise in their art. It’s the story of a work ethic that produced enough records to make shelves groan and saw Mark E Smith performing his final gigs in a wheelchair just a few weeks before his death from cancer.  It’s the story of a complex personality who, despite the often chaotic circumstances surrounding the group, always managed to come back (sometimes amazingly) sounding like The Fall. And it’s a story about the fans – the league of obsessives who still continue to analyse Mark’s lyrics, discuss which line-up is on which record and argue about whether ‘Slates’ is an album or not…

My intention is to interview ex-members of The Fall, friends, foes and fans to get the full story from beginning to end. I want to make a film that does justice to the importance of the group and conveys the admiration, respect and love that is still felt for The Fall to this day.
